Craco

---

Craco itself has very few places to stay, so the best options are in nearby Pisticci, roughly 10-15 km away.

• Hotel Torre Fiore Masseria - elegant masseria, pool, excellent reviews; my pick for a special stay.
• Il Casale dei Calanchi - highly rated B&B in the distinctive Calanchi landscape.
• Masseria Crocco - attractive countryside farmstay and good value.
• Hotel degli Ulivi - larger hotel with spa facilities, near Ferrandina.

For Craco sightseeing specifically, Torre Fiore Masseria and Il Casale dei Calanchi are particularly convenient choices.

Would you like me to prepare a map with driving routes from these hotels to Craco, so you can easily compare travel times?

Because Craco is a completely abandoned ghost town evacuated in the 1960s, there are no hotels located directly inside the town . Instead, visitors stay in the surrounding historic towns and rolling countryside of Basilicata—such as Pisticci, Montalbano Jonico, Ferrandina, and Tursi —which are all within a 15-to-30-minute drive.

The top-rated accommodations located near Craco are organized below by style and location.

🏰 Luxury & Authentic Farmhouse Stays (Masseire)

Hotel Torre Fiore Masseria : Pisticci (approx. 20 mins from Craco). A highly rated 4-star boutique hotel set inside a beautifully restored 16th-century fortified farmhouse. It features individually decorated suites, an infinity pool with stunning rural views, and an excellent on-site restaurant serving authentic local cuisine. It is widely considered the best premium option for exploring the area.

Masseria Crocco : Montalbano Jonico (approx. 25 mins from Craco). A working farm and lodge that is highly popular with travelers visiting the ghost town. Known for its traditional evening restaurant, warm Italian hospitality, and excellent house wine production, it offers a deeply rustic experience.

📜 Historic Town Boutiques & Comfort Hotels

Palazzo dei Poeti : Tursi (approx. 30 mins from Craco). A charming 3-star historic hotel built directly into the ancient stone walls of Tursi's Rabatana district. It features stone-walled rooms, an intimate atmosphere, and free breakfast. It is perfect if you want to pair your Craco trip with exploring another highly historic, winding hillside village.

Hotel degli Ulivi : Ferrandina (approx. 25 mins from Craco). A stylish, newly renovated 3-star hotel located right off the Basentana highway, making it incredibly convenient if you are road-tripping through southern Italy. It offers modern clean rooms, a spa, and a spacious outdoor pool.

Il Casale dei Calanchi : Aliano (approx. 25 mins from Craco). A small, top-rated country hotel positioned perfectly to explore the lunar-like clay ravines (calanchi) of Basilicata. It offers exceptionally peaceful surroundings and an authentic slow-travel vibe.

💡 Practical Tips for Visiting Craco

Guided Tours are Mandatory: You cannot walk through the ghost town on your own. You must book a guided tour at the municipal visitor center, where you'll be provided with a hard hat to walk the safe paths.

The Matera Alternative: If you prefer luxury cave hotels, many travelers choose to base themselves in the famous city of Matera (about a 50-minute drive away) and visit Craco as a day trip.

Would you prefer to stay in a historic village center or a rural countryside farmhouse ? If you are planning a full route through Basilicata, let me know your travel dates so I can check real-time availability for these properties.

Craco (the famous abandoned ghost town / Craco Vecchia in Basilicata, Province of Matera, Italy) has no hotels inside the historic site itself, as it is uninhabited and accessible only via guided tours (with helmets and a permit). The modern settlement of Craco Peschiera (a few km away) has very limited options, mainly private apartments or holiday homes rather than full hotels.

Visitors typically stay in nearby towns (roughly 10–20 km away, a short drive) such as Pisticci, Ferrandina, Tursi, Stigliano, or Bernalda, and use Craco as a day trip. Matera (about 50–55 km) is another strong base if you want more choices and attractions.

Top recommended hotels near Craco (based on consistent high guest ratings across Booking/Trivago/Tripadvisor and similar sites)

Here are some of the strongest options frequently ranked highest for the area:

1. Torre Fiore Hotel Masseria (Pisticci, ~13–14 km from Craco)
Often the standout choice. Restored historic masseria (farmhouse) with infinity/panoramic pool, excellent restaurant focused on local Basilicata cuisine, spacious and stylish rooms/suites, very attentive staff, and peaceful rural setting with views. Ratings typically 9.5+/10 or 4.8/5 (hundreds of reviews). Guests praise it as a relaxing oasis ideal as a base for exploring Craco, the calanchi (badlands), and the Ionian coast. Higher-end/price tier.

2. Hotel Ristorante Mariano (Stigliano, ~17–18 km)
Excellent ratings (often 9.5–9.6/10). Charming, with a nice garden, authentic local/Italian food, and solid value. Frequently recommended for its hospitality and convenience to Craco.

3. Palazzo dei Poeti (Tursi, ~14–15 km)
Historic setting (in the Rabatana area) with terrace dining and panoramic views. Strong ratings around 9.0/10. Good for a more characterful stay.

4. Hotel Degli Ulivi (Ferrandina, ~13 km)
Popular, more affordable option with panoramic valley views, outdoor pool, and park. Solid mid-range ratings (around 7.9–8.0/10 with many reviews). Convenient location and practical base.

Other solid nearby options:

• Villa Il Carrubo – Basilicata (Pisticci area) — High ratings, sea views, picnic/BBQ facilities.
• Fontana La Pietra (near Pisticci) — Good for countryside feel, sometimes with spa/quad excursions.
• Borgo San Gaetano or Hotel Giardino Giamperduto (Bernalda area) — Strong Tripadvisor scores for comfort and location.
• Agriturismi (farm stays) in the surrounding countryside often offer authentic experiences with pools and home-cooked food.

Practical tips

• Closest practical bases: Pisticci or Ferrandina for the shortest drives to the ghost town.
• Book guided tours for Craco in advance (especially in peak season); access is controlled.
• A car is highly recommended — public transport is limited.
• For more luxury or variety, consider staying in Matera (Sassi cave hotels are a highlight of the region) and day-tripping.
• Check current availability/prices on Booking.com, Tripadvisor, or similar, as they fluctuate seasonally. Many properties emphasize local food, outdoor pools, and the peaceful rural setting of southern Basilicata.

If you’re looking for a specific budget, style (luxury, family-friendly, agriturismo), or dates, I can refine the suggestions further!

Craco itself has virtually no conventional hotel infrastructure because the historic hilltop settlement is an abandoned “ghost town” visited only on guided tours. Most travelers stay in nearby towns (especially Matera, Pisticci, or Montalbano Jonico) and visit Craco as a day trip.

Where people actually stay when visiting Craco

1) Matera (most popular base, ~45–60 min drive)

Matera has the widest range of highly rated hotels and is the usual recommendation for Craco visitors.

• Sextantio Le Grotte della Civita – luxury cave-hotel in the Sassi, often cited as one of the region’s best.
• Palazzo Gattini – elegant central hotel with spa and refined service.
• Plus many other well-reviewed options across budget levels in and around the Sassi.

2) Pisticci / Pisticci Scalo (~20–30 min from Craco)

Closer than Matera and often cheaper, with agriturismi and small hotels.

• Look for properties advertising views over the Basento valley and outdoor pools, which are common in this area.

3) Montalbano Jonico and nearby hill towns (~20–35 min)

Small B&Bs and agriturismi; good if you want a quiet, rural base.

4) Craco San Vincenzo / Craco Scalo (the modern “new” Craco)

This is where the living population and services are; accommodation is mostly B&Bs, agriturismi, and vacation rentals rather than classic hotels.

• The local Pro Loco Craco lists places to stay and can advise on current options.
• Airbnb and similar platforms show multiple vacation rentals in and around Craco.

Practical tips

• If you specifically want a “hotel” with reception, restaurant, and consistent amenities, Matera is the safest bet.
• If proximity matters more than hotel polish, search for agriturismi near Craco Vecchia / Craco San Vincenzo on booking sites and filter by distance to “Craco”.
• Because Craco’s old town is accessed only via guided tours, plan your day around the Parco Museale Scenografico di Craco schedule and choose lodging with easy road access (SS106/SP ex SS106).

If you tell me your budget, preferred style (hotel vs agriturismo vs rental), and whether you care more about being close or having more amenities, I can narrow this to a short list of specific properties with typical price ranges.
