We asked

«what are the best mountain areas and parks in Liguria?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

If by “mountain areas” you mean the best places for hiking, big views, forests, and a more alpine/Appennine feel, Liguria has several excellent choices. The nicest thing is that many of them combine mountains with views of the Mediterranean.

My top picks

  1. Parco Naturale Regionale delle Alpi Liguri - best for real mountain scenery

    • In western Liguria, near the French border.
    • The most “Alpine” part of Liguria, with peaks reaching over 2,000 m.
    • Monte Saccarello is the highest mountain in Liguria.
    • Great for longer hikes, high-altitude landscapes, forests and, in winter, snowshoeing.
    • Look around Mendatica, Monesi, Upega and the Bosco delle Navette.
  2. Parco naturale regionale del Beigua - best overall

    • Probably my #1 recommendation if you only visit one mountain park.
    • The spectacular feature is the combination of mountain ridges + enormous sea views.
    • There are roughly 500 km of hiking trails, including sections of the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri.
    • Excellent areas: Monte Beigua, Monte Reixa, Passo del Faiallo, Pratorotondo, Varazze and Sassello.
    • Particularly beautiful on a clear day when you can see the Ligurian coast from the ridge.
  3. Parco Naturale Regionale dell'Antola - best for peaceful hiking

    • Inland behind Genoa, around the Trebbia and Scrivia valleys.
    • Much quieter and less touristy than the coast.
    • The main goal is Monte Antola (1,597 m), with broad views toward the sea and Alps.
    • A particularly good hike is the loop from Rifugio Parco Antola, about 4 hours and 350 m elevation gain.
    • Great choice if you want meadows, forests, wildflowers and solitude.
  4. Parco dell'Aveto - best for a “Little Switzerland” feeling

    • In the Ligurian Apennines near Santo Stefano d'Aveto.
    • More rugged and mountainous than the areas immediately around Genoa.
    • Highlights include Monte Penna, Monte Maggiorasca, Monte Bue, Groppo Rosso and Foresta delle Lame.
    • The regional tourism authority specifically describes it as the “Switzerland of Liguria”, with beech/fir forests and glacial lakes.
    • Excellent if you like forest hikes and higher mountains.
  5. Ente Parco di Portofino - best mountain + sea combination

    • Not really high mountains, but an exceptional hiking landscape.
    • Steep wooded slopes plunge toward the Mediterranean.
    • The San Rocco → Batterie → San Fruttuoso area is particularly spectacular, though some sections are quite demanding.
    • Perfect if you want to combine hiking with Camogli, Portofino and San Fruttuoso.
  6. Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre - best for dramatic coastal hiking

    • Again, not “mountains” in the alpine sense, but the hills rise sharply from the sea.
    • Terraced vineyards, cliffs, forests and villages make it one of Liguria's most distinctive landscapes.
    • Monterosso-Vernazza and the higher trails above the villages are particularly beautiful.

If I were choosing by type

What you want Best choice
🏔️ Highest, most alpine mountains Alpi Liguri
🌊 Mountains + sea views Beigua
🌲 Forests & peaceful hiking Aveto
🌼 Quiet Appennine landscapes Antola
🏖️ Mountain hiking + beautiful villages Portofino
📸 Dramatic scenery Cinque Terre
🚶 Long-distance trekking Alta Via dei Monti Liguri

The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri is also worth knowing about: it runs roughly 400 km along Liguria's mountainous backbone, crossing the Alpi Liguri, Beigua and Aveto parks.

My personal top 3 for a first trip:
🥇 Beigua - best all-rounder
🥈 Alpi Liguri - best actual mountains
🥉 Aveto - best wild/forested mountain experience

If you're coming from Emilia-Romagna, I can also narrow this down to the 5 best mountain areas in Liguria that are easiest to reach by car, including approximate driving times and the best hikes in each.
