We asked

«what are the best cities to visit in Lombardy?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

Lombardy is much more than Milan: you can combine major art cities, Alpine scenery, and the Italian lakes. If you're choosing where to spend your time, these are the places I'd put on your shortlist:

  1. Milan - best for a first trip
The obvious starting point, with the Duomo, Brera, Sforza Castle, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, fashion/design, museums, and Leonardo's Last Supper.
    Milan

  2. Bergamo - best historic city
Particularly beautiful is Città Alta, the medieval upper town enclosed by historic walls. It's compact, atmospheric, and makes an excellent 1-2 day trip.
    Bergamo

  3. Como - best for Lake Como
Como itself is worth exploring for its cathedral, historic center and lakeside setting, but its bigger appeal is as a base for exploring the lake by boat, including places such as Bellagio, Varenna and Tremezzo.
    Como

  4. Brescia - best underrated choice
A good option if you like history without the crowds of Milan or Lake Como. The city combines Roman remains, medieval architecture, elegant squares and access to Lake Garda, Lake Iseo and Franciacorta.
    Brescia

  5. Mantua (Mantova) - best for Renaissance art
A gorgeous, relatively small art city surrounded by water, with the legacy of the Gonzaga family and attractions such as Palazzo Te. It's particularly good for architecture, art and a slower-paced visit.
    Mantua

  6. Cremona - best for a quieter authentic experience
Famous for violin-making, with the impressive Torrazzo and cathedral dominating its historic center. It's a nice choice if you want somewhere less tourist-oriented.
    Cremona

  7. Pavia - best day trip from Milan
A historic university city with attractive streets and churches, plus the spectacular Certosa di Pavia just outside the city.
    Pavia

If I were planning a Lombardy trip

I'd structure it roughly like this:

4-5 days: Milan → Bergamo → Como/Lake Como
7 days: Milan → Bergamo → Lake Como → Brescia → Mantua
10+ days: Add Pavia, Cremona, and some of the smaller Lake Como villages or the Valtellina.

One important distinction: Como is a city, while Lake Como is a whole destination. If your priority is scenery and charming villages rather than city sightseeing, I'd spend more time around the lake than in Como itself.

If you tell me how many days you have and what you like (food, lakes, nightlife, art, hiking, romantic towns, etc.), I can map out a Lombardy itinerary for you.
