We asked

«what are the best cities to visit in Emilia-Romagna?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

Emilia-Romagna is one of Italy’s best regions for a city-hopping trip: you get medieval and Renaissance centers, incredible food, mosaics, cars, and the Adriatic coast. The main cities are also relatively easy to connect by train.

If I were planning a first trip, I’d focus on these:

City Best for How long
Bologna Food, atmosphere, architecture 2-3 days
Ravenna Byzantine mosaics & history 1 day
Modena Food & Ferrari/motoring 1 day
Parma Parmesan, prosciutto & elegant city center 1-2 days
Ferrara Renaissance architecture & cycling 1 day
Rimini Beach + Roman history + nightlife 1-2 days

1. Bologna - the essential first stop

Bologna is probably the best base for exploring the region. Its historic center has arcades, medieval towers and Piazza Maggiore, while the city's food culture is a major attraction. The famous porticoes are also UNESCO-listed.

Don't miss:

  • Piazza Maggiore
  • the medieval towers
  • the Quadrilatero food market area
  • the porticoes toward San Luca
  • tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini and mortadella

Piazza Maggiore is a good starting point for exploring the center.

2. Ravenna - spectacular mosaics

Ravenna is the standout if you love art and history. Its eight early-Christian and Byzantine monuments are UNESCO World Heritage sites, famous for extraordinarily preserved mosaics.

The highlights include Basilica of San Vitale and Mausoleo di Galla Placidia.

My suggestion: give Ravenna a full day rather than trying to squeeze it into a few hours.

3. Modena - food + Ferrari

Modena is compact but exceptionally rewarding. It's associated with traditional balsamic vinegar, excellent food and Ferrari, while its cathedral complex is one of the city's architectural highlights.

See:

  • Piazza Grande
  • Modena Cathedral
  • Ghirlandina tower
  • a traditional balsamic producer
  • the Ferrari museum if you're interested in cars

Piazza Grande and Modena Cathedral are right in the historic core.

4. Parma - perhaps the best food-focused stop

Parma combines a beautiful historic center with some of Italy's most famous foods: Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma. The regional tourism authority specifically highlights Parma alongside Modena and Reggio Emilia for Emilia-Romagna's gastronomic heritage.

I'd visit the cathedral and Palazzo della Pilotta, then devote part of the trip to food.

5. Ferrara - Renaissance Italy at a slower pace

Ferrara has a very different feel: quieter, spacious and exceptionally good for walking or cycling. Its historic center and Este heritage are UNESCO-listed.

The centerpiece is Castello Estense. The city walls are also worth exploring.

Best choice if: you want a beautiful, relatively relaxed day away from the busier tourist circuit.

6. Rimini - for the coast

Rimini is best known for its Adriatic beaches and nightlife, but there's more to it than seaside tourism. The historic center contains Roman monuments including the Arch of Augustus and Tiberius Bridge.

Arco di Augusto is an easy place to begin exploring the old city.

If you only have 4-5 days

I'd do:

Bologna → Modena → Parma → Ravenna → Ferrara

Bologna works particularly well as the base because the main cities are connected along the regional rail corridor.

If you have 7+ days, add Rimini and perhaps some smaller places such as Brisighella, Dozza or Comacchio. The region's official tourism site highlights these smaller towns for their distinctive historic character.

For a first visit, my practical shortlist would be Bologna, Ravenna, Modena and Parma. They give you four very different sides of Emilia-Romagna: city life, Byzantine art, automotive culture and food.
